Desecration of Truth

Desecration of Truth

As an elder curmudgeon I certainly have my pet peeves. They have a wide range and some are more irksome than others.

One of the most nefarious to me is the manipulation of the great inspired and insightful words from the prophets humankind has been blessed with. The Super Bowl Dodge Ram ad is a prime example of taking something profound and humbling from the great MLKjr and juxtaposing it on an image of crass materialism.

Certainly these kinds of mendacious appropriations occur all too frequently, particularly by ego-maniacal politicians. They prey on people who may lack critical thinking skills, or worse yet, to impressionable school children.

The inimitable Bob Marley, in one of his greatest songs, Redemption Song, poignantly asks “How long shall they kill our prophets/while we stand aside and look?” As for me, these sacred utterings from ancient times such as the Tao-Te Ching, to more contemporary such as Gandhi and MLK, provide enduring comfort, insight, and inspiration.
