“Oh if there’s an original thought out there I can use it right now.”
(Bob Dylan-Brownsville Girl)
In the midst of a fallow period in his creative art, Dylan had this line in one of his songs.
Some could see it as a throwaway line, a sardonic sentiment. Yet it reveals a fundamental truth: out there beyond individual ego, beyond I, lies the fount of profound insight and wisdom. Perhaps humankind’s false worship of its own knowledge obscures a more enlightened humility, and a fresh approach to dealing with contemporary challenges that are existential threats to our children and grandchildren.
The degradation of the environment, the widening gap between the haves and the have nots, the rise of tribalism and the rapid unbridled growth of technology without the counter balance of wisdom are a mere few global threats.
The prophets all say, in their own inimitable vernacular, anyone whom enters a transcendental state where I and thou are united taps into the prodigious well of wisdom from yore. With a refreshed mind one is able to apply and adapt it to the modern world. Oh for more original thoughts to spring forth!
Amen ! Thanks for such clarity and eloquence.
